ramdisk-patch-1.0_tj for Freesco 030

Announcements of packages that are now released.

<font color='#0000FF'><span style='font-size:17pt;line-height:100%'>ramdisk-patch-1.0_tj (beta)</span>

<span style='color:red'>WARNING: This has been made for Freesco 0.3.0 and not for 0.3.1.  According to Lightning, this patch is incompatible with 0.3.1.  Install on 0.3.1 at your own risk.  You have been warned.</span>

synopsis:

This patch is intened for hard drive install only.  It will install a new ramdisk that links the /var folder on the hard drive.  This means that all kernel logging will now survive a reboot and we'll no more be left in the dark in case Freesco hang hard.

Also, the /var/log and /var/run are now hard folders, no more a symlinks looping back into /var.  This caused me a problem with qmail packaging i'm trying to build which expect to find a /var/qmail AND /var/log/qmail each with their own rights.  This is impossible with current ramdisk and I assume this problem could also happen with other softwares, this fix it.

Installation:

Just log to a terminal, connect to the net and type:

pkg -i http://freesco.tecknojunky.com/030/ramdisk-patch-1.0_tj

Current ramdisk will be back up, rc_boot will be patched, the new /var will be created on your ramdisk (/pkg/var) and reboot to use the new ramdisk.

Check the logs :)

Miscel...:

Please send me feedback if it goes well or not.  In intensely tested on my test box but it's only one box among many.  If, for one reason or another, you box wont restart no more, boot in DOS and do:

C:\>cd \router
C:\ROUTER>dir ram*

In DOS, the file ramdisk-patch-1.0_tj.ramdisk (the backup of old ramdisk) will have a mangled name.  I hope you don't have to many starting with ramdis*.
C:\ROUTER>copy ramdis~?.??? ramdisk (or whatever the mangled name shall be)
Reboot the PC and it should go fine.

Finally, you may notice that boot time kernel messages may not all get logged anymore.  The reason is that syslogd && klogd are started prior to the hard drive being mounted.  I had to juggle a little to make all this work without things getting logged to the console or breaking other things.  The price is that everything logged before the hard drive been mounted are lost.  To my knowledge, this is limited only to the UMSDOS version message echoed when ... the hard drive is mounted  :;):  :D .

Again, report success and failures.  Thanks.</font>

<font color='#000000'>Thanks,

just what i needed. FYI. The people who are using the freepanel from the blitzaffe need to change their cgi's. Steve Blinch from the blitzaffe is doing some log filtering on the /var/log/message path, like displaying probes etc. I just understood that /var/log is the normal path for log files. I changed it in my copy of the freepanel cgi scripts.

Nizchka

Now I hope that I have some logs left after a crash/reboot
Thank you</font>

<font color='#0000FF'>the pid file problem might have to do with the fact that the shutdown script might have been written in mind that the pid files are in the ramdrive and would neccessarely be gone after a reboot.  The correction would be to clean up the /var/run folder in the shutdown script.</font>

<font color='#000080'>If I am wrong here Tecknojunky please just let me know or remove this post.

Do not install this package on 031. The differences between the ramdisks, make this package completely incompatible with version 0.3.1</font>

<font color='#0000FF'>I have not tested on 031.  I don't know what is different, but since this package go do some rewriting on the start scripts, possibilities are high that it is incompatible.  Also, if the file structure has changed, then this increase the possibility also.  I'll make a big fat warning on the main post.

It might be a nice feature to add to 0.3.2 :;):

I can't test right now, mainly because I don't have the time right now.  I'm fully dedicated to me univesity semester right now.  I don't have a free hard disk so I might give it a shot in a vmware machine, when I have the time... which may not be soon...</font>
