You could skip the chapter(s) about installing MySQL and only focuse on learning the SQL syntax and other MySQL-related syntax. :)

Might I ask what the author is trying to teach you with the example?

Hi,

To begin with you might make a start with what you have and search for "php and mysql tutorial" on the web.

My first steps were <a href='http://www.webmonkey.com/programming/php/tutorials/tutorial4.html' target='_blank'>http://www.webmonkey.com/programming/php/t.../tutorial4.html</a>
it is sufficient to have the Freesco PHP-MYSQL set for that.

When you have mastered that it's fairly easy to continue with programming features that need PHP 5

A very good tutorial on mysql can be found at MYSQL itself. <a href='http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/tutorial.html' target='_blank'>http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/tutorial.html</a>
I prefer the PDF version for printing, but this is just to show you. After having read this you will be able to master MYSQL in a simple but efficient way.
Combined with the webmonkey knowledge you can create productive websites.

Hope this helps.
