Thttpd+_php-4.2.3_the.icy.k + Ssl

3rd Party Package Requesting

Postby Zedde » Thu Apr 05, 2007 5:10 am

Hello

I posted <a href='http://www.freesco.org/support-forum/index.php?showtopic=16076' target='_blank'>0.3.7 pkg support post </a> and asked if you could use SSL by just installing thttpd+_php-4.2.3_the.icy.k and openssl-0.9.6g_user_nadegda

Got the answer that you need to make a new pkg for it.

I could try my self but it would be good if I could get som hints what to do.

If there is any vmware img file to setup a lab.

If someone can't make it for me =)

If you need any specific information I am more than willing to provide it. But you should know up front that I have done some extensive testing with thttpd+php and I found that if you are processing PHP pages the system requirements are a LOT higher than when using the Apache package because PHP is an intergral part of Apache rather than seperate as it is with thttpd. So for normal html pages thttpd is hands down more efficient than Apache but NOT for PHP pages and I am guessing not for SSL pages either.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.

Also a BIG disadvantage for thttpd with PHP as CGI module is that all PHP requests are serialized. This means that when one sessions is active hosting a PHP page, the next client must wait until the first request has completed!

Again Apache (where PHP is a loadable module) does not have this disadvantage.

You can tweak Apache down to minimize its system resources (i.e. by not loading modules that you don't need). You can run Apache on a surprisingly small box, although with PHP you need lots of memory and a reasonable fast CPU to get good response times.

You mentioned your box is too limited to run Apache, exactly how limited?

FYI: I have thttpd 2.21b with PHP 4.4.7 up and running already on my zipslack, but now I fail to find how to add SSL to thttpd (but the PHP module already has it compiled in).

Maybe <a href='http://www.stunnel.org/' target='_blank'>http://www.stunnel.org/</a> is a solution?

<a href='http://www.stunnel.org/examples/https_windows.html' target='_blank'>http://www.stunnel.org/examples/https_windows.html</a>

it an howto for ack! windoze, but it clearly shows how an ordinary HTTP server can be turned into one that understands HTTPS via stunnel (with a (self signed) certificate and everything)

Cool

Well I talked to lightning abit and I'm trying apach out.

I have just installed it. Going to look in to the modules tomorrow.

Just trying to figure out if there is a sertan folder for the https pages.

I have a Ppro 200Mhz 96 ram
So it's not the fastest system

If I could integrate the webpwd_0.2p2_dingetje pkg the apach server .

There's no need to integrate the webpwd_0.2 package in Apache. It's a standalone web server by itself. However, you could host the web password page with Apache via SSL.

Your box is indeed on the low end for Apache, mainly memory wise, so tune your httpd.conf to remove anything you don't need and also keep the number of Apache processes as low as possible.
