With the Triton kernel it MIGHT be possible to get the SATA working. But it is dependent on the chipset on your motherboard. This applies to both hard drives and CDroms. Although with a CDrom you also need a CD kernel or to load the iso9660 driver in the /boot/drv/ directory.
I will also say that SATA support is limited to only a few different chipsets, so the likelihood of it working is not high.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.
