Hi FREESCOnians,

Foxmarks a Firefox extension lets you easily back up your bookmarks to the Foxmarks server and sync them to any browser with the extension installed.

Today I'll detail how to use the Foxmarks extension to back up and sync your bookmarks to your own personal FTP server, whether it's with a hosted account or your own home server.
Why would I want to do this?

Before you dive into this simple project, you should know that Foxmarks works great freshly installed with its own servers if you just run through the setup wizard and register with the Foxmarks web site.

However, if you're not comfortable keeping all of your bookmarks on someone else's server, or you just prefer to roll your own solutions so that you have total control over what happens with your data, this tutorial is for you. So while you definitely don't need to do this by any means, if any of the preceding reasoning appeals to you, forge ahead!

The first thing you need to do is create a folder on your FTP server for your Foxmarks bookmarks. You can put your bookmarks anywhere you want to, but you need to be sure that your path ends with your FTP username like so:

/docs/bookmarks/{ftp username}

The path to your bookmarks folder can differ from mine (it's really up to you), but you need to be sure that the last folder matches your FTP login (for example, my FTP username is pc1mh, which is why the last folder is named 'pc1mh'). Keep in mind that this means if you want to set up multiple Foxmarks back ups/syncs on your FTP server, you'll have to set up multiple users with FTP access.

1. Install Foxmarks Firefox extension. After you install Foxmarks, you'll need to restart Firefox.

2. When Firefox restarts, you'll be prompted by the Foxmarks set up wizard. Since you're rolling your own Foxmarks back up, cancel the wizard (which just helps you set up/verify your account with Foxmarks). Be sure to click "Don't automatically start wizard again" so you're not prompted with the setup wizard every time you restart Firefox.

3. Go to the Bookmarks menu and click on Foxmarks.... In the Setup tab, enter your FTP server's username and password (which you should have set up when you set up your server). Be sure that the Enable Automatic Synchronization checkbox is ticked.

4. Now click on the Other tab. This is where you'll set up Foxmarks to match up with the folder you set up above.

First, be sure to click the FTP radio button. Then, in the server field, enter the URL of your FTP server. If you're setting this up on your home server, you can assign a domain name to your server with DynDNS.

Finally, in the path field, enter the path to the bookmarks folder you set up above (the one that ended in your FTP username).

5. Now all you need to do is check and see if everything worked. The first time you set this up, you'll want to get a set of bookmarks backed up that you can sync to your other computers, so click the Upload Now button. When it asks if you'd like to overwrite the remote bookmarks with the local set, click OK (you're not overwriting anything if this is the first time you run it). If all goes well, you should see a status window telling you that the bookmarks were uploaded successfully.

You can also check your FTP back up directory to see if it worked - you should now see a file in your designated folder called foxmarks.xml.

6. To synchronize your bookmarks on other computers, just follow steps 1-4, then - instead of clicking the Upload Now button - click the Download Now button. Once your bookmarks have downloaded, and assuming you've set Foxmarks to perform automatic synchronizations, you should always have an up-to-date back up of your Firefox bookmarks ready to sync to any computer over the internet.

What you lose by using your own server, and what you gain

You lose two Foxmarks features by using your own FTP server: 1) You can't log into the Foxmarks web site and access all of your bookmarks from there (handy if you're on a browser you can't install Foxmarks on), and 2) You can't merge bookmarks the first time you run Foxmarks. [1] Personally, neither was a big loss for me, since the only time I've actually used the Foxmarks web site is to verify that I could do so, and I generally have one computer that has all of my master bookmarks anyway - the rest of my computers are normally an incomplete set of the master.

On the other hand, you gain an easy way to manage your bookmarks on your own terms.

If you'd like to set up multiple bookmark accounts (via multiple FTP logins or the Foxmarks web site - either would work), you can very quickly swap bookmark profiles with Foxmarks by changing your login information and downloading a different set of bookmarks. You never have to worry about losing any set of bookmarks, since all you'd need to do is switch users to get a different set back.
