What To Use For A File Server Or Nas ?

Postby auda » Sat Oct 18, 2008 11:40 pm

I think it was this post asked about using FREESCO as a file server.

There are a few problems with using FREESCO as a server or NAS:
...1) Files can't be bigger than 2 GB.
...2) Slow checking large drives every 32 mounts and when the power goes off.
...3) Its not very fast.
...4) Samba isn't controled from the control panel.

...1) For me this is a real problem.
...2) I have a UPS so power failures are now rare FREESCO doesn't automaticly shutdown though.
...3) I get 3-4MB/s when watching video, coppying one large and many small files from both drives. Thats fast enough for me.
...4) Use samba-swat. How often do you need to change samba ?

And a few good points:
...1) Rock-solid stablity.
...2) Small and compact.
...3) Excelent support.
...4) Easily expandable, WWW, Email, print server, etc. Even as a Router/Firewall !
...5) Can run headless, no keyboard or monitor.

What are some of the alternatives ?
FreeNAS seems popular.
The system requirments from the website are:
....CPU a P2 is ok P3 is better
....RAM 128MB min 256MB is better
....Drives up to 2TB, has to be supported in BIOS to boot.
....Uses less than 32MB once installed.
....

Looks good and has a cool devil logo. However it uses the UFS file system so you can't use the drive you have with FREESCO without moving all your data. It does support ext2 but can't check the drive if its not unmounted cleanly. Not very good for reliablity.

NASLite v1.x
The hardware requirments from the website are:
....486DX or better processor
....PCI bus
....16M or more of RAM
....1 to 4 IDE fixed disk drives (any size)
....PCI or on-board network interface adapter
....3.5" floppy disk drive
But then I read "For greatly improved performance, unrestricted large file support, try NanoNAS" ($10). So what is the maximum file size ? I don't think it can be installed to a harddrive either.

Openfiler
The minimum hardware requirments from the website are:
....32-bit 1GHz or higher performance processor
....512MB or higher of RAM
....512MB disk space for memory swap area
....1GB disk space for Openfiler OS installation
....100MB Ethernet network interface
Recommended hardware requirments from the website are:
....64-bit 1.6GHz or higher performance processor
....1GB or higher of RAM
....1GB disk space for memory swap area
....2GB disk space for Openfiler OS installation
....1Gb Ethernet network interface

Too big, Too much RAM, Too much CPU power needed.

Clark connect [url]http://www.clarkconnect.com[url]
Hardware requirments from the website are:
Users.....<5............5-10....10-50.....50->200
CPU....500 MHz...1 GHz...2 GHz....3 GHz
RAM....512 MB....1 GB.....1.5 GB.....2 GB
Installation and logs require 1 GB drive space

Too big, Too much RAM, needed.

SME Server
The minimum hardware requirments from the website are:
....CPU 400MHz
....RAM 256MB
....HDD at least 4 GB
Recommended hardware requirments from the website are:
....CPU 1.5GHz
....RAM 512 MB
....HDD at least 40 GB

Might be ok, except for the RAM and 4 GB of hard drive needed ? I didnt spend much time looking so I dont know how much is needed to only install it.

I haven't tried any of these so my thoughts may well be wrong. Please correct me if I am.

[url]http://minisys-linux.de/EN/server.html[url] Muppy-server shows promise, its small 128MB, its linux, and runs Samba. I like that as I dont have to learn something new before I use it. But I cant set a static IP, due to a bug in the code, and some of it is in German I'm waiting for the next version.
Unfortunatly that isnt going to happen as he has stopped working on it.

I'm wondering about DSL. A bit of an over kill what with a browser email x-windows and the like, still it may be the best I come up with. If only FREESCO handled big files.
That is very unlikley to happen, because as Lightning said " the file size limit is related to libc5, so it would be extremely difficult to make the changes necessary without going to lib6 and that would require changing everything."

Just to update this list. I used Slack mini server for a few months then switched to Slitaz, forget why. Its stable is being actively developed and I have had no problems with it. I did use it as a print server as well for a while with cups then I got a Brother MFC 7440n which just plugs into the network.
Soon I will be trying it with Sata hard drives
